As a custodian you also get to give out Honorary Custodian stickers if you see someone cleaning up as well. I’d find that there were Disney sticker collectors out and about as well who’d come up to me and ask if I had any. In Frontierland, some of the most common stickers we got to give out were Cowboy Mickey, Woody and Jessie. I’d normally do this when I’d run out of cleaning to do so I’d often wait at the exit to Splash Mountain or Thunder Mountain and hand some out. There was one family that I met about four times in the space of two weeks who kept coming to me to pin trade as they’d remember me! I even ended up on a Facebook page with this guest’s Eeyore plush that goes around the parks and meets cast members:Īnother fun thing I regularly did was give out stickers. Pin trading often led to some great guest interaction as you’d get into an extended conversation, which often involved talking about the fact that I’m from the UK as they’d notice that it said that on my name tag. So one of the big bonuses of being a custodian was that we got to wear pin lanyards which a lot of other roles don’t get to do. Anyone can go up to cast members with pins and ask to trade one of their own pins with one on the cast member’s lanyard. For those who don’t know, pin trading is a big thing in Walt Disney World and you may notice cast members wearing lanyards with trading pins on. One of the fun things I got to do was pin trading. This worked well when trying to communicate with guests who didn’t speak any English.

For instance, if a guest wanted directions to Space Mountain, I could walk them over to Tomorrowland instead of just telling them how to get there. That was one of the good things about being a custodian, was that because the costume is not themed within a specific land, you are allowed to walk all over the park, within reason. I also had to take valuable items to lost and found in Main Street which was always quite fun as it meant you could leave the land and wander through Magic Kingdom on your way to lost and found. I had to deal with lost children a few times, apart from in Disney it is never the child that is lost, but the parents. I’d get disgruntled guests come up to me and moan about the stormy weather as it meant that some of the rides were closed for a few hours so I’d have to deal with that. So with being a first point of contact with guests also meant that I’d have to deal with guest problems and complaints a fair amount. I worked in a park so the questions that I got asked were normally to do with the parks, so I’d assume that the custodians in the resorts and Disney Springs would get asked slightly different things to what I did. So you’re kind of like a walking information point so it helps if you know your Disney parks. The most common question was probably “where is the nearest restroom?” but you’d sometimes get more in depth ones about booking fastpasses and what certain rides are like, I’d even get asked for recommendations on where to eat. I was just cleaning while doing all these things.Ĭustodians are often the first cast member guests go to when they’ve got a question, so you get asked a lot of things. So this included things like giving directions, helping guests plan their day, answering lots of questions, pin trading and making magical moments. I’d say that the majority of my role was actually guest interaction which is why I’m talking about it first.

Custodial is a role that many people overlook when selecting their preferences for the program and I didn’t really think much of it so put it as a medium interest role. My role when I worked in Disney was custodial in Frontierland in Magic Kingdom.
